Association for Group and Individual Psychotherapy

The Association for Group and Individual Psychotherapy was founded in 1974 as a Professional Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists. It now has members working in London, the rest of the UK and in Europe.

AGIP, based in Archway, North Islington, offers through its training section, apptraining, a pluralistic and innovative training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and a clinic, easily accessible to those seeking therapy.

AGIP's training is recognised by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy who in a recent review said 'AGIP continues to offer an excellent training environment and more than conforms to college standards.'

AGIP's Psychotherapy Service is highly regarded in North London. We offer consultations, assessments and referrals for ongoing psychotherapy and a low-fee psychotherapy scheme, the Fairbridge Clinic.

FOUNDATION COURSE in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

This course is offered by apptraining, the training section of AGIP. It is a one year course offered over 10 Saturdays, one per month between October 2019 and July 2020. It is a stand-alone first year of a four year training as a psychoanalytical psychotherapist or Jungian analyst and is aimed at: those who are sure they wish to train; those who are wondering if a training in psychoanalysis is for them; those working in allied fields who believe that an understanding of psychoanalytical ideas would be of value to them (which could also represent fulfuilling their professional CPD requirement); and those working in the arts and theatre who wish to consider the links between the arts and psychoanalysis.

Candidates must be at least 23 years old and have some experience of working with people in a helping capacity. All students are required to be in once a week analysis with an AGIP approved therapist for the duration of the course.

Students with an attendance records of 80% (or better) may opt for a Certificate of Attendance or they choose to submit a written assignment for the full Certificate (those wishing to apply for the subsequent three clinical training are required to submit the assignment).

In addition to the Saturday seminars there is also an Induction session in mid-September. Full details of the course structure, content and other details are advised to visit our web site.

CLINICAL TRAINING in Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy

This course is offered by apptraining, the training section of AGIP. It is a three year clinical training in psychoanalytical psychotherapy and Jungian analysis leading to registration with the UKCP. Satisfactory completion of the apptraining Foundation Course is a requirement (although exemption from the Foundation course in suitable cases may be considered by the Training Committee). The course is offered over ten weekends each academic year starting in October 2019.

Trainees are required to be in twice weekly psychotherapy, with a period of more intensive therapy, with an AGIP approved therapist for the whole course and up to the point of final qualification. In addition, they are required to work with training cases under supervision.

There is a non-refundable application fee of £125 (to cover the two interview and admin costs).

The minimum age for admission is normally 25 years but the Training Committee will consider younger candidates who can demonstrate the necessary experience and maturity.

The training is pluralist - that is, a broad range of psychoanalytical theories are presented in seminars (eg Freud, Jung, Klein, Bion, Lacan, Object Relations, Attachment theory, Relational psychoanalysis) and trainees are encouraged to find their own working synthesis of these ideas. This allows those who qualify to work as either a psychoanalytical psychotherapist or a Jungian analyst.

In addition to the weekends, there is an Induction session in mid-September. As the teaching is at weekends, this may enable people who might not otherwise be able to, to travel to London to train.
