Role Description:

The Rape Crisis Helpline Volunteers offer:

- Non-directive, empathetic listening and support to women and girls age 13+ who have experienced any form of sexual violence at any time in their lives. This includes Rape, Child Sexual Abuse, Prostitution, Sexual Assault, Ritual Abuse and Child Sexual Exploitation
- Information and support to access our face to face services
- A non-judgemental, non-discriminative approach
- Signposting and support to access other services

The role also involves:

- Adhering to Solace and Rape Crisis helpline policies and procedures
- Attending one group clinical supervisions monthly and de-brief after every call/shift and asking for support when needed outside of these times
- Respecting confidentiality and anonymity
- A commitment to self-awareness

Benefits to the volunteer

You will have the opportunity to work towards an OCN Level 2 or 3 accredited qualification for 'Professionals working in the Sexual Violence Sector'.

During the training you will learn about:

Feminism, Rape, Child Sexual Abuse, Rape Culture, The Criminal Justice Process, Coping Mechanisms, Trauma, Suicide, Self-Harm and the Impact of Sexual Violence.

You will develop skills in:

Empathetic listening and non-directive support, dealing with Anger and Suicide, taking crisis calls, assessing risk and signposting appropriately.

You will join a team of committed and passionate women working hard to end violence against women and girls and supporting survivors on their journey to healing.

Skills and Qualifications Required

- A commitment to working in a feminist organisation which understands sexual violence to be a cause and consequence of gender inequality
- A willingness to learn about the impact of sexual violence and an ability to respond in a supportive, non-directive manner to survivors
- An empathetic listener
- A non-judgemental and non-discriminatory attitude

Training Opportunities

Volunteers will be able to access Solace Women’s Aid’s induction and internal volunteer training programme. Full support will be given to help volunteers understand and carry out any aspect of the role as appropriate.

Expenses:

As per our Volunteer Policy the following expenses will be reimbursed:

- Travel expenses will be reimbursed at a maxium of £10 a day.
- Agreed lunch expenses up to a maximum of £3.50 will be reimbursed for those volunteering for over 6 hours in a single day.
